A major industrial fire and explosion at Highlands Farm near East Hanningfield in Essex has left 20 firefighters hospitalised and several emergency vehicles destroyed, in what officials are calling one of the most complex incidents in recent years.

Emergency services were first called at approximately 4:50 p.m. to reports of a rapidly spreading fire involving industrial units along Southend Road, between East Hanningfield and Rettendon. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered an intense blaze that had already engulfed multiple structures and nearby farmland.
At around 5:46 p.m., the situation escalated dramatically when fertiliser stored inside one of the units exploded. The force of the blast prompted Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to declare a major incident, enabling a coordinated multi-agency response and the deployment of additional resources.
More than 100 firefighters were involved at the height of the emergency, battling flames under extremely hazardous and unpredictable conditions.
Twenty firefighters were taken to hospital following the explosion. Four sustained minor injuries, while the remaining personnel were treated as a precaution, including checks for possible hearing damage due to the blast.
All have since been discharged and are receiving ongoing welfare support.
The intensity of the fire also led to the destruction of:
- Three fire engines
- Two officer response vehicles
This level of damage highlights the dangerous environment crews faced while working to contain the blaze.
The fire is now under control, but crews remain at the scene addressing lingering hotspots and transitioning into the recovery phase. Authorities continue to work alongside local agencies and resilience partners to ensure the area is safe and stable.
Residents and nearby businesses have been thanked for their cooperation and for adhering to safety guidance during the incident.
A formal investigation into the cause of the fire and subsequent explosion has begun. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while specialists assess the scene and gather evidence.
This incident underscores the risks faced daily by emergency responders. Despite the scale of the explosion and destruction, the swift actions of firefighters prevented further escalation and protected surrounding communities.
Further updates are expected as investigators determine the exact cause and full impact of the fire.
