The McHenry, Illinois, community is reeling following a tragic boating accident on the Fox River that claimed one life and left others injured on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency crews from the McHenry Township Fire Protection District and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:30 p.m. to the 1800 block of South Fernwood Lane after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a collision between two boats.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a devastating scene involving a smaller vessel and a larger triple-engine boat. An occupant of the smaller boat was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Witnesses at the scene indicated the victim was a female, though authorities have not yet officially released her identity pending notification of next of kin.
At least one other from the smaller boat sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. All other individuals involved in the crash were reported to be out of the water when emergency crews arrived.
Preliminary reports from witnesses suggest that both boats were traveling northbound on the Fox River when the larger vessel, allegedly moving at high speed in a no-wake zone, struck and rode over the smaller boat. The impact caused catastrophic damage and led to the fatal outcome.
The larger boat reportedly came to rest partially off the river in a wooded area. Witnesses also stated that multiple occupants of that vessel fled the scene following the collision. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any suspects have been identified.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and has taken custody of the deceased for further examination. Officials are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including potential violations and contributing factors.
This tragic incident has left the community shaken, as loved ones mourn the loss of life and others recover from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
