The Lubbock, Texas community is mourning the tragic loss of Stephon Jones, 37, who was fatally shot during an early morning altercation on Saturday, leaving family and friends heartbroken as authorities continue their homicide investigation.
According to the Lubbock Police Department, officers responded at approximately 1:59 a.m. to a residence in the 1900 block of East Auburn Street, near Parkway Drive inside Northeast Loop 289, following reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Stephon Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said Jones and another individual had arrived outside the home of a 65-year-old man, where a verbal confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation. Police allege that the homeowner then shot Jones.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder. He remains in custody at the Lubbock County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
While officers were processing the scene, a large crowd reportedly gathered in the area, making it difficult for investigators to secure the location. Additional units were called in to restore order and allow detectives and forensic personnel to complete their work safely.
